PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Do you know that there are many factors that contribute to periodontal disease, such as poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, and diabetes?

Approximately, 95 percent of Americans with diabetes also have periodontal disease, due in part to an increased susceptibility to infections.

And, statistics show that people with poor dental hygiene have a greater chance of developing periodontal (gum) disease. People with gum disease also have a 2.6% greater risk of stroke or TIA,  low birth weight babies, and also have an increased risk of heart disease.

The first stage of gum disease is called Gingivitis. This condition occurs where bleeding, inflamed gums, and chronic mouth odor are consistently present.

Gum disease is estimated to affect 4 out of 5 people, and since it is painless in the early stages, only a dentist or registered dental hygienist can help properly detect and treat gum disease.

So it is VERY important to make sure you have regular check-ups and cleanings. If gum disease is not treated, it can lead to tooth loss.

With the use of the intra-oral camera, you the patient can now see the early signs of gum disease /gingivitis yourself, (the areas that are bleeding or inflamed).  Seeing these signs early can help give you the chance to stop gum disease in its tracks.
